The role that builds the internal culture and capabilities an organisation needs to absorb change.
The term comes from Linda A. Hill, Emily Tedards and Jason Wild, Genius at Scale (Harvard Business Review Press, 2026), who name three roles that innovation at scale depends on: the Architect, the Bridger and the Catalyst. The Architect works inside the organisation and creates the conditions for co-creation (psychological safety, creative abrasion, creative agility).
In practice the Architect’s work happens in moments of truth, too: creating room for dissent without losing alignment, giving feedback that builds capability rather than compliance, holding the tension between exploitation and exploration. Frameworks rarely survive these moments, practised responses do. The order matters. Build inward before you bridge outward, because Catalysts without Architects create movements the organisation cannot absorb.
